Degree Requirements

Requirements for the Major

Guidelines for the Major

  • 100-level courses (including freshman seminars and CPLT 101) do not count toward the major
  • CPLT 490 is only offered during Fall semesters once a year. Please plan your academic schedules accordingly.
  • A literature course that does not count toward the major of the department that offers the course would also not count for the Comparative Literature major.
  • Majors are encouraged to fulfill their three literature electives with advanced courses
  • ALL CPLT CORE COURSES MAY NOT BE REPEATED FOR CREDIT.
  • One course required for concentration in a given field may be taken on an S/U basis with the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies and the department.

The five core courses

  1. 201 Major Texts: Reading Comparatively
  2. 202 Major Texts: Literatures, Genres, Media
  3. 301 Methods of Interpretation
  4. 302 Literary Theory
  5. 490 Literature Major Seminar (only offered in the Fall semester)

Electives

  • Two courses in a language other than English at the 200 level or above. Students should take a Language Placement Exam as soon as possible, no later than early in their sophomore year. This should give students the two years they need to take the usual 100-level & 200-level sequence to complete by graduation. ***Students planning to study abroad should attempt to fulfill their language requirements even earlier to have a buffer semester/year.***
  • Three courses offered by the Dept. of Comparative Literature at the 300 level or above (up to two of these courses may be replaced by literature courses in a language other than English at the 300 level or above)
